Youth and Vocational Service
Principal achievements for 2011-12 are:
We recommended three NYSF candidates to District. Only one, Riley Metcalfe was selected. Riley was actually allocated to the Perth session of NYSF. He was further successful in applying for the APEC Youth Science Festival and wrote to us:
“Please thank your Rotary club, on my behalf, for providing such incredible opportunities through the NYSF. I'll be more than happy to return and to talk to you once I have gone on the AYSF”.
We have established an ongoing relationship with Campbell High School as a source of candidates for programs catering for that age group. This has so far resulted in us sponsoring two students, Luke Gougeon and Poppy Davies, to attend the September RYPEN, and another two, Madi Jones and Taila-Ann Moorby to attend the May RYPEN.
We sponsored one student, Rowan Hearne, to attend the Honeywell Engineering Summer School in December, and we have another candidate, Matthew McDowell from Hawker College under consideration for the 2012 session.
We have been long time supporters of RYLA, and this year was no exception. We sponsored two applicants, Alison Bigg and Christopher Montgomery, both from the University of Canberra.
I attended one of the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness days arranged by the Rotary Club of Canberra, and took part as one of the Rotarian staff during the day. This was an information gathering exercise to see if this was an activity that we might take up in the future, and is still under consideration.
